On July 2, 2020, a tragic accident occurred at Assis Gaa Farm in Uasin Gishu County, leaving a 19-year-old student, Ibrahim Aburi, with a lifetime of regret. Aburi, who was undertaking an attachment at the farm, had his fingers chopped off by a machine while preparing hay for cattle.
Aburi was rushed to Top Hill Hospital, where he spent three months due to failure to settle the hospital bill, which had hit Sh900,000. He was eventually released after his advocate reached an agreement with the hospital's representative.
Speaking to The Standard at his Ensakia village home in Nyamira County, Aburi expressed his happiness at being finally out of the hospital. However, he was visibly sad about losing his finger and the attachment opportunity. He claimed that the company he was working for at the time of the accident has since abandoned him.
Aburi, an agribusiness student at Elburgon Vocational Training Centre, is now seeking compensation for the lost finger and termination of his attachment. His ordeal serves as a stark reminder of the importance of workplace safety and the need for employers to take responsibility for their employees' well-being.
