July 1, 2020, marked a significant milestone for Jacque Maribe, a renowned media personality, as she reflected on her journey to stardom. Her decision to quit her dream of being a lawyer and instead opt for broadcast journalism was all thanks to bagging a role in a Hollywood movie that premiered back in 2005.
At the time, Maribe was in State House Girls High School and had joined the drama club. Her experience in the club paved the way for her to land a role in the drama film Constant Gardner, which was shot in Loiyangalani and Kibera slum in Nairobi.
“Initially, I was meant to do law when I got to State House Girls, I got into the drama club. Things started opening up and I got a movie role in [a Hollywood movie] Constant Gardner and an role in the Time Chill TV adverts,” Maribe told Mista Dru in a live Instagram session.
Maribe explained that after experiencing life on set, she fell in love with the idea of working on TV. Her role as Wanza Kiluhu in the Constant Gardner was a significant turning point in her career, as it exposed her to the world of broadcast journalism.
The movie, which premiered in 2005, follows the lives of a British diplomat, Justin Quayle (Ralph Fiennes), who is investigating the murder of his wife, and activist, Tessa (Rachel Weisz). The two were based in Kenya, where they uncovered a multinational drug company's sinister plot to test its tuberculosis drugs on children, resulting in fatal side effects.
As Justin Quayle tries to uncover the death of his wife, he meets up with Wanza Kiluhu (Jacque Maribe), a local in Kibera slums, who points him in the right direction of his investigations. The movie features a talented cast of Kenyan actors, including John Sibi Okumu, Ainea Ojiambo, Nganga Kirumbura, Peter King, and Mumbi Kaigwa.
