Coronavirus Cases Rise in Kenya

As of July 1, 2020, Kenya has reported 307 new cases of coronavirus, bringing the total number of cases to 6,673.

According to Health CAS Rashid Aman, the new cases are from 3,591 samples tested in the last 24 hours, out of a total of 173,355 samples tested so far.

Dr. Aman noted that the youngest of the new positive cases is 1-year-old, while the oldest is 81-years-old.

The distribution of cases by county is as follows:

  • Nairobi: 154 cases, with the highest number of cases reported in Dagoretti North (34), Kibra (22), and Embakasi Central (18).
  • Mombasa: 38 cases, with the highest number of cases reported in Mvita (22) and Likoni (10).
  • Machakos: 33 cases, with the highest number of cases reported in Athi River (32) and Yatta (1).
  • Kiambu: 20 cases, with the highest number of cases reported in Ruiru (4), Kiambu Town (6), and Kabete (3).
  • Narok: 20 cases, with the highest number of cases reported in Narok North (20).
  • Kajiado: 14 cases, with the highest number of cases reported in Kajiado Central (7), Kajiado North (5), and Kajiado East (2).
  • Busia: 10 cases, with the highest number of cases reported in Teso North (6) and Matayos (4).

One more patient who contracted coronavirus in Kenya has succumbed, bringing the death toll to 149.

The Health Ministry has also reported that 50 more people have been discharged after full recovery, raising the tally of recoveries in Kenya to 2,089.

Dr. Aman warned that if measures to contain the spread of coronavirus are not taken seriously, the gains made so far could be eroded.

He reiterated that Kenya was one of the first countries in sub-Saharan Africa to take measures to contain coronavirus, which helped contain the spread.

However, Dr. Aman decried the laxity of Kenyans in adhering to containment measures, saying this is the reason behind the increase in the number of positive cases.

He emphasized the need for personal responsibility to tame the spread of coronavirus in Kenya and called for counties to have a 300-bed capacity to conduct tests.
