On December 8, 2019, a 26-year-old woman visited the Lamu Police Station to report that her husband had forced her to take abortion pills to terminate an unplanned pregnancy.
However, her ordeal took a tragic turn when Police Constable Rodgers Ouma, 28, who was stationed at the Lamu police lines, took advantage of her vulnerability and raped her.
According to the evidence presented in court, PC Ouma had promised to assist the victim in pursuing justice, but instead, he lured her to his house and committed the heinous crime.
Principal Magistrate Allan Temba found PC Ouma guilty of two offences: rape and abuse of his position of authority as a police officer.
During the court session conducted via video link, Mr. Temba stated that the prosecution had established beyond any reasonable doubt that PC Ouma committed the offence of rape after obtaining the consent of the complainant by means of threats and intimidation.
PC Ouma will be sentenced on Friday after a victim impact statement is filed this week.
