Nairobi courts have taken a significant step towards embracing technology, with the introduction of an electronic case filing system. This new system, announced by Chief Justice David Maraga, will enable courts to conduct hearings and deliver judgments and rulings more efficiently.

According to the Chief Justice, the digitization of Judiciary services is a crucial step in harnessing technology to deliver judicial services to Kenyans. He noted that the system has been designed, developed, and implemented by the Judiciary's Directorate of ICT, and has several advantages, including increased speed, accuracy, and efficiency of service delivery.

However, the Chief Justice acknowledged the challenges of poor internet connectivity, urging judges and litigants to ensure stable internet connections to avoid disruptions to services. He also called on the ICT Ministry to improve internet connectivity in rural areas, citing the importance of stable internet connectivity in the digital age.

Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji praised the Judiciary for the initiative, stating that it will reduce corruption, enhance transparency, and accountability. The e-filing system will also save time for court users, who will be able to file their pleadings online.

The move comes as the courts continue to adapt to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Judiciary has been stepping up efforts to incorporate technology into its operations, including the use of Court Recording and Transcription Systems.

As part of the new system, lawyers and individuals involved in civil cases will wait to be called for appearances, while prosecutors and detectives handling criminal cases will be required to attend court on specified dates.
