Kenya: Machakos Hospital Reopens After COVID-19 Outbreak

Shalom Community Hospital in Machakos County has been allowed to resume services after six employees tested positive for COVID-19.

The hospital was closed on Friday, June 26, after four patients died of COVID-19, prompting the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) to order the hospital's medical director to fumigate and disinfect the entire facility.

Following an inspection and approval by officials from the county government and KMPDC, the hospital has been given the nod to resume normal operations.

"The hospital resumes services as provided for under Cap 253 of the Laws of Kenya. The security teams currently deployed at Athi River Shalom Community Hospital vacate with immediate effect," read a statement from KMPDC CEO Daniel Yumbya.

Dr. Yumbya directed that the sealing off of the hospital be lifted with immediate effect, and the hospital's management has assured that they will comply with all set protocols to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

"It's just unfortunate that we have ended where we are. We have no animosity with Governor Mutua and, in fact, we are partners in the provision of health services in the county," said Dr. Onyango, the hospital's CEO.
