On June 30, 2020, Nyali MP Mohammed Ali tabled documents at a press conference, alleging that Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho's family had benefited from multibillion deals dished out by Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia's ministry.

The documents, which were presented as evidence to support the impeachment motion, showed that Joho-owned Portside Terminals had been illegally allocated exclusive rights to manage berths number 7 and 8 at the port of Mombasa without parliamentary approval or public participation.

The allocation of the berths, which was done a month ago, is set to see thousands of Kenya Ports Authority employees declared redundant, according to the Dock Workers Union.

Ali also accused Abdulswamad Nassir, the chairman of the Parliament Investment Committee and Mvita MP, of being awarded a multimillion tender by Kenya Ports Authority to supply manual labour, a move that works against the interest of permanent KPA employees.

The Nyali MP's bold move to challenge the powers that be on behalf of the economically oppressed port city residents has raised his political profile and is now the perfect opposition for the Joho administration.

Analysts say if Jicho Pevu's popularity continues to accelerate up to the 2022 general elections, he could pull a surprise.
