On July 1, 2020, Chief Justice David Maraga made a public appearance at the Supreme Court grounds, launching the Digital Court filing system.
Just a day prior, a woman named Mary Kwamboka Onyancha had caused a stir at the Milimani Law Courts, claiming to be Maraga's baby mama and alleging that he had fathered a child with her.
Speaking at the launch, Maraga addressed the controversy, reiterating a statement made by his lawyers that he would not retire before the end of his term in January 2021.
According to Maraga, the Judiciary has a strict procedure for retirement, which involves a retiring judge going on terminal leave several months before their effective retirement.
“Listening to speakers here, it’s almost like they are biding me farewell. I’m still around for a while and I still got a number of things to do,” Maraga said.
“The Judiciary has a strict procedure which involves a retiring judge going on terminal leave. When my time comes, I will receive a letter from the Chief Registrar of the Judiciary and that will be sometimes in November so I;m still around. Don’t worry,” Maraga added.
