On July 1, 2020, a fact-finding mission was conducted to assess the status of Ruring'u Stadium in Nyeri County, which has been under construction for three years.
During the mission, Sports Kenya Director Mwangi Muthee expressed disappointment over the contractor's failure to meet the deadline, despite being paid. Muthee emphasized that the delay was causing frustration among Kenyans and the people of Nyeri, who were eagerly awaiting the completion of the stadium.
As a sporting nation, Kenya requires modern infrastructure to host various sports events, including cricket, rugby, and hockey. Muthee noted that Ruring'u Stadium was an ideal location for expansion and that the government was committed to developing sports infrastructure across the country.
However, the contractor, Sam Mwaniki, disputed the claims, stating that the government paid him on an interim basis. Mwaniki thanked the government for resolving financial payment issues and promised to deliver the field and tracks by the end of September 2020.
Nyeri County Commissioner Loyford Kibaara warned that unspecified action would be taken against the contractor if he failed to meet the deadline. Kibaara emphasized that the government had paid the contractor all his dues and had no excuse for not completing the stadium by September 30, 2020.
