July 1, 2020, marked a tumultuous day for Kenya's Chief Justice David Maraga, as he faced intense online backlash over allegations of neglecting his family.

The controversy began when a woman appeared at the Milimani law court, wailing and accusing Maraga of not taking care of their six-year-old daughter, who was a product of an extra-marital affair.

Netizens, who had previously branded Maraga “Baba Shantel,” took to social media to express their disappointment, not only with Maraga's handling of his personal life but also with his leadership of the judiciary.

They alleged that under Maraga's tenure, the judiciary had become a force of backwardness and destabilization, posing an existential threat to the country.

One Twitter user, @WaruhiuFranklin, wrote, “The Failed CJ Maraga has been attacking President Uhuru seeking his attention! But He doesn't have time for side shows. Sorry #BabaShantel. Retire and go to your Grandchildren if any!”
