Malawi's re-run presidential election, held on June 23, 2020, has seen the opposition leader Lazarus Chakwera emerge victorious.
Chakwera had initially disputed the results of the initial election, claiming it was not free and fair.
After the re-run, Chakwera secured a landslide victory, defeating incumbent President Peter Mutharika with 58.57% of the total votes cast.
Several leaders, including Tanzania's President John Pombe Magufuli, have congratulated Chakwera on his win.
Magufuli, in a tweet, expressed his support for Chakwera and pledged to strengthen the bilateral relationship between the two countries, particularly in economic and social development.
"I congratulate Dr. Lazarus Chakwera on his election as President of the Republic of Malawi. On behalf of the Government and the people of Tanzania, I pledge to continue and strengthen our good neighbourly, friendly and good neighbourly relations, especially in economic and social development. Congratulations, Mr. President," Magufuli tweeted.
Chakwera was officially sworn in as the new President of Malawi on June 28, where he also thanked the Malawian people for electing him to lead the country.
