On June 4, Austin Oduor, a clinical officer and president of the Global Association of Clinical Officers, took a voluntary Covid-19 test. Two days later, he received a positive result.
As a front-line worker, Oduor is highly exposed to the disease due to his profession. He was working at a center near the Kenya-Tanzania border, an area with reported cross-border transmissions.
Oduor was quarantined at Macalder Isolation Centre in Nyatike, about 80km from his workplace. He expressed concern about the living conditions at the center, calling for improvements in nutrition, sensitization, and overall care.
Published on July 1, 2020, Oduor's experience highlights the need for a coordinated approach to fighting Covid-19. He advocates for the healthcare function to be reverted to the national government from the counties.
According to Oduor, 'Covid-19 is real, and can be avoided through washing one's hands thoroughly, cleaning surfaces, avoiding crowded places, and seeking medication.'
