Kenya's Inflation Declines to 4.59% in June

Kenya's inflation rate declined to 4.59% in June, marking a significant drop from the 5.5% recorded in May. This is the lowest rate since September 2019, according to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics.

On a monthly basis, inflation decreased by 0.31% from 0.63% in May, a welcome relief for consumers.

The food and non-alcoholic drinks index saw a notable decrease of 1.27% between May and June 2020, with prices of tomatoes, Irish potatoes, cabbages, oranges, and wheat flour decreasing by 12.16%, 5.05%, 4.84%, 4.00%, and 4.00% respectively.

Other notable decreases include housing & utilities (1.4% from 2.6% in May) and alcoholic beverages & tobacco (6.8% from 8% in May).

However, the prices of onions, sukuma wiki, and spinach increased by 3.51%, 4.67%, and 2.61% respectively.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) decreased by 0.31% to 108.27, from 108.60 in May.

Bus/matatu fares rose by 50.6% during the month, while cooking gas increased by 1.5%.

The transport sector saw a significant increase in inflation, rising to 6.9% from 5.2% in May, while recreation & culture also saw an increase to 3% from 1.5%.
