June 30, 2020, marked a significant day for the tourism and hospitality industry in Kenya's coastal region as stakeholders expressed hope for the sector's revival following the reopening of the economy.
During a media briefing in Mombasa, the Kenya Coast Tourism Association (KCTA) Chief Executive, Julius Owino, and other industry leaders declared their preparedness and readiness for the reopening of the industry.
Victor Shitakha, the PrideInn Coast Region Manager, commended the national and county government in Mombasa for opening up the industry, calling on them to fast-track the issuance of licenses for those who have complied so they can get back to business.
The stakeholders emphasized their commitment to observing safe operation procedures and called on the government to balance reducing the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic with saving lives, livelihoods, and the economy.
They requested coastal county governors to support businesses by giving rebates and waivers on rates and licenses, as the businesses have not been operating and it would take time before they pick up.
The tourism and hospitality leaders assured employees who are under unpaid leave that they will soon resume to duty and earn their salaries and benefits like before the pandemic.
