On July 1, 2020, UEFA's president Aleksander Ceferin met with Portugal's Prime Minister Antonio Costa to discuss plans for the Champions League finale in Lisbon.

According to UEFA, all parties involved are committed to working together to deliver a successful event in Lisbon, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

As part of the measures to contain the spread of the virus, the Portuguese government has restricted the movement of people in 19 parishes of the capital, excluding downtown Lisbon, from July 1-14.

The Champions League finale will feature a straight knockout format, with the quarter-finals and semi-finals played over one leg, instead of the usual two, and the final scheduled for August 23.

Paris St Germain, Atletico Madrid, Atalanta, and RB Leipzig have already qualified for the quarter-finals, while the remaining four last-16, second leg matches will take place on August 7-8, either at the originally scheduled venues or in Portugal.
