Kenya's honey production potential is a lucrative opportunity that has been largely untapped. With an estimated 100,000 metric tonnes of honey production potential, the country has a significant gap in meeting the global demand for honey.
According to Savannah Honey, a Kenyan social enterprise that has been empowering interested beekeepers for the last seven years, the country's flora leaks every flowering season with over 80% of nectar untapped. This has led to a situation where Kenya imports over 80% of its honey from Tanzania, despite having favorable climatic conditions for beekeeping.
"Bee-keeping in Kenya has been practiced traditionally for many years, but only 20% of the country's honey production potential has been tapped," says Paul Kyalo, CEO of Savannah Honey. This has resulted in a huge market for honey in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East remaining untapped.
With the global shortage of honey, Kenya has the potential to at least bridge part of it. However, little effort has been made in this direction. Savannah Honey has recruited over 4,000 farmers in East Africa and has recently launched a new program targeting 7,000 who may not necessarily have time or land for beekeeping but are interested in making money from modern beekeeping.
The Langstroth beehive, used by Savannah Honey, is a multi-layered structure that encourages bees to build their hives in an orderly fashion, making it easy for beekeepers to harvest honey. The frames are designed to separate honeycombs, making it easier for beekeepers to manage the bees and honey collection effortlessly.
For those interested in investing in honey production, Savannah Honey offers a 6-year contract, providing training on modern beekeeping, provision of langstroth beehives and other beekeeping equipment, management of the apiaries, provision of bees, technical support, and marketing of the honey.
With the potential to earn millions from idle land, money is indeed in honey. Contact Savannah Honey today and invest in the lucrative opportunity.
