Deputy President William Ruto's 2022 campaign is facing a major setback after four influential billionaires ditched his team, leaving a significant financial dent.
The billionaires, including David Langat, Joshua Kulei, Zedekiah Kiprop Bundotich (alias Buzeki), and Silas Simotwo, were key financial backers of Ruto's campaigns.
Their departure is attributed to disagreements over various projects, including the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) contract, the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport's Greenfield terminal, the school laptop project, and special economic zones.
According to Nation, the billionaires were angered by Ruto's failure to fulfill his end of the bargain, leading them to seek new alliances with rival political formations.
David Langat and Buzeki have joined Chama Cha Mashinani, while Joshua Kulei has aligned with Baringo Senator Gideon Moi's KANU. Both parties have a pact with Jubilee, further isolating Ruto and his allies.
A source revealed that CCM and KANU will work together in an alliance that will challenge Ruto's ambitions.
“We are working on a strategy where CCM and Kanu are going to work together before joining a larger alliance that will have a better chance of forming the next government,” the source said.
