On June 30, 2020, Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi addressed the National Assembly, providing an update on the COVID-19 situation within the institution.

According to Muturi, only two Members of Parliament have tested positive for coronavirus. One of the affected lawmakers has since been discharged after undergoing successful treatment, while the other is still in isolation at home.

Speaking to the House, Muturi emphasized the need to reassure the public and dispel ongoing speculation surrounding the situation. He attributed this decision to a recent article published by The Standard, which reported that several MPs had tested positive for the virus.

Politicians have faced criticism in recent days for their failure to observe COVID-19 containment measures, often gathering in large groups. Muturi urged the media to refrain from sensationalizing the cases in Parliament, stating that they were no different from other cases in the country.

He directed House committees to hold virtual meetings instead of physical ones and emphasized the importance of adhering to Ministry of Health guidelines and his own authority.

As of June 30, 2020, Kenya had recorded 6,366 infections and 148 deaths due to COVID-19. Muturi advised MPs or parliamentary staff who may have come into contact with infected individuals to take personal responsibility and undergo voluntary testing and self-isolation.

The National Assembly has implemented measures to ensure the safety of its members, including amending its rules of procedure to allow for virtual sittings.
