On June 30, 2020, the Kirinyaga County Assembly approved a Ksh.15.6 million budget allocation to the office of Deputy Governor Peter Ndambiri, a move seen as defiance against Governor Anne Waiguru.

The allocation was made by the chairman of the budget committee, David Mathenge, who is also the Baragwi ward MCA.

Waiguru had accused her Deputy of supporting the impeachment motion filed by Mutira Ward MCA David Kinyua Wangui, which flopped.

As the rift between the MCAs and Governor Waiguru deepens, they also slashed her legal fees from Ksh. 60 million to Ksh. 1 million.

The office of Kirinyaga County Secretary Joe Muriuki was allocated Ksh. 1 million, despite Waiguru's recommendation of Ksh. 111 million.

The county assembly also allocated Ksh. 116 million towards the fight against the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

Kirinyaga has 14 beds to cater for COVID-19 patients, and the total 2020-2021 financial year budget for Kirinyaga County is Ksh. 5.6 billion.
