On June 30, 2020, the Kirinyaga county assembly made headlines by slashing Governor Anne Waiguru's legal fees from KSh 60 million to KSh 1 million.
The move came during a session to approve a KSh 5.5 billion budget, where ward reps argued that the allocated amount for legal issues was too high and needed to be reduced to support other sectors, such as education.
Interestingly, the office of the deputy governor, which had not been allocated any funds in the budget, was awarded KSh 15.6 million by the assembly.
Waiguru's deputy, Peter Ndambiri, has been at odds with the governor for the past six months, and some MCAs have been supporting him.
"We had to act when we discovered that the office of the deputy governor had not been allocated any funds by the devolved government. This is an important office and it can't operate without finances," said one of the MCAs.
The move is seen as a continuation of the political power struggle between Governor Waiguru and the Kirinyaga county assembly, which had previously vowed to push for her impeachment.
