Uganda's opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) leaders are courting Dr. Kizza Besigye to be the party's presidential flag bearer in the 2021 elections.
According to sources within the party, the FDC's top hierarchy has been contacting Dr. Besigye to contest against President Yoweri Museveni, the likely NRM flag bearer, for the fifth time.
Dr. Besigye, however, has expressed reluctance to contest in 2021, alleging that the vote would be rigged like in the previous elections.
"Even our local supporters have been reaching out to him," said a source at the FDC headquarters, who preferred to remain anonymous.
"Dr. Besigye, however, has a lot of reservations on elections because he still looks at it as a ceremonial ritual that cannot yield anything big," the source added.
Dr. Besigye's reluctance has not deterred the FDC's leadership, with President Patrick Amuriat stating that the party had not yet met Dr. Besigye officially, but they were slated to meet him soon over the matter.
Ms. Betty Aol Ocan, the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, has also been contacting Dr. Besigye to contest as the party's presidential candidate, citing him as the right person for the job.
