June 30, 2020 - The COVID-19 pandemic has forced the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to make significant changes to its calendar. The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to take place in Cameroon, has been postponed to 2022.
Additionally, the Women's Cup of Nations, which was set to take place in November, has been cancelled. The tournament had not yet selected a host country, and the qualifiers were postponed in April due to the virus.
CAF President Ahmad Ahmad explained the decision in a virtual address, stating, "Health is the priority for everyone and we should protect all sportsmen, officials, journalists and the public as well. This is the sacred mission of CAF."
Instead of the Women's Cup of Nations, CAF will introduce a Champions League tournament for women next season.
The African Nations Championship (CHAN), originally scheduled for April in Cameroon, has been rescheduled for January 2022. The draw for the tournament had already been completed.
The CAF Champions League and Confederations Cup will also see changes. The semi-final and final matches will be played in a single-leg format in September, with Morocco hosting the Confederation Cup matches. The host for the Champions League matches has yet to be determined.
CAF's General Assembly will take place in Addis Ababa in December, pending the situation with the virus. The elective assembly is scheduled for March 2022, following the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Mauritania.
