As of June 30, 2020, only two Members of Parliament had tested positive for COVID-19, according to Speaker Justin Muturi.
One of the MPs has since recovered and is in self-isolation after testing negative following treatment.
Speaker Muturi assured the public that Parliament has put in place necessary measures to curb the spread of the virus, including collaboration with the Ministry of Health.
‘There have been media reports of alleged cases of COVID-19 in Parliament. As you all know, Members of Parliament, just like any other citizens are susceptible to the disease,’ Muturi said in a communication to the House.
He cautioned the media against sensationalizing the cases, emphasizing that the medical details of individuals, including Members of Parliament, are confidential and ought to be treated as such.
Going forward, Parliament will endeavour to ensure that all users are safeguarded from the disease through continued collaboration with the Ministry of Health.
‘Any information required on this matter will be provided in accordance with the existing guidelines relating to such matters,’ Muturi said.
