Gor Mahia FC is in mourning following the death of club legend and veteran defender Suleiman Khamis Shamba, who passed away on June 30, 2020 due to kidney failure.

Shamba, a towering central defender, joined Gor Mahia in 1979 and was part of the squad that reached the finals of the Africa Cup Winners Cup against Canon Younde of Cameroon.

He left the club in 1986 and retired from playing football, but his legacy lives on. Shamba also played for Harambee Stars and was part of the team that won the Cecafa nations cup thrice in 1982, 1983, and 1984.

After retiring from football, Shamba went on to serve as the Nyanza North Football Kenya Federation chairman from 2012 to 2016 and was an employee of the Kisumu West constituency development fund until his demise.

The club has mourned their late player and consoled with his family, saying,

“It’s with deep sorrow we have been informed of the demise of our legend Suleiman Khamis Shamba, which occurred this morning in Kisumu, please keep his family and friends in prayers. RIP legend! #Sirkal,” they wrote on their social media platforms.
