On June 26, 2020, a disturbing incident shook Mwala Sub County in Machakos, Kenya. Daniel Kisilu, an assistant chief in Mithanga sub-location, was arrested and arraigned in court for allegedly defiling a 16-year-old class eight pupil.
According to reports, Kisilu allegedly committed the offence on Friday, June 26, 2020, in Mithanga Vyula village. The incident is in contravention of section 8(1) as read with section 8(2) of the Sexual Offences Act no. 3 of 2006.
Senior Resident Magistrate Charles Ondieki granted the prosecution's request to hold Kisilu at the Masii Police Station for a further seven days to allow for completion of investigations. The prosecution had objected to releasing the suspect on bail, citing concerns that he might interfere with investigations due to his popularity in the area.
Investigations into the incident have already commenced, and the minor is currently being cared for at the Kyawango Children Rescue Center. Machakos County Children Officer Salome Muthama has condemned the incident and vowed to follow up the case until justice is meted against the alleged perpetrator.
Reacting to the incident, Mwala DCIO Catherine Kinoti called upon the public to take a decisive role in safeguarding the rights of children. She emphasized that her office would continue pursuing those preying on minors in the area to ensure justice is served for the victims, especially during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
