Kenyans Praise Uhuru's Kazi Mtaani Initiative ¶
June 30, 2020 - Kenyans have taken to social media to applaud President Uhuru Kenyatta's Kazi Mtaani programme, a key component of the Economic Stimulus Package aimed at providing employment to thousands of youths in informal settlements.
The programme, spearheaded by the State Department of Housing and Urban Development, has seen over 26,000 youths deployed in urban hygiene and sanitation works across 23 informal settlements.
In Nairobi, 10,600 Kenyans living in Mathare, Kibera, Mukuru, and Korogocho have been enlisted for the programme and have been undertaking daily sanitation and environment preservation duties in the respective settlements.
Under the hashtag #UhuruMtaani, netizens shared photos of visibly happy youths working on various programmes in different counties, praising President Uhuru for coming up with a project that has benefitted unemployed youth across the board, regardless of their educational background or location.
As the programme shifts to long-term projects, youths will be involved in construction activities, manufacturing blocks for use in setting up schools, dispensaries, and community halls.
According to the programme's guidelines, youths must be aged 18-35 years, be Kenyan citizens, and have a good conduct to be recruited.
