COVID-19 Lockdown Devastates Low-Income Areas

As of mid-March, when Kenya reported its first coronavirus case, over 40% of residents in Nairobi's low-income areas had lost their jobs, a recent survey by Tifa Research found.

According to the survey, which polled 579 respondents, 43% of Kenyans reported a complete loss of income, while 69% experienced a reduction in earnings.

Respondents who saw a decrease in earnings due to the pandemic were most likely to cut back on spending on food and drinks, with 61% making this adjustment.

Other areas of expenditure that saw significant reductions included rent, clothing, entertainment, and transportation.

Tifa Research CEO Maggie Ireri warned that hunger could become a pressing issue if the virus and lockdown continue, potentially leading to increased crime in Nairobi and other challenges.
