On June 29, 2020, Busia County Commissioner Joseph Kanyiri expressed concern over the high level of disregard for COVID-19 health guidelines in the county.
Speaking to KNA, Kanyiri noted that a significant majority of traders failed to adhere to the Ministry of Health directive to wear face masks, with 99% of traders not wearing masks and 90% of those who buy goods from the market not following the directive.
“Within the boda boda sector, almost 95% do not wear face masks,” he said, emphasizing the need for police officers to continue arresting suspects and taking them to court.
Kanyiri warned that flouting the directives may lead to loss of many lives across the country and its neighbors, and that the county may be forced to consult with the County government before closing the markets to protect lives.
He also urged elderly men to stop engaging in intimate relationships with young girls, instead allowing them to pursue their education, and warned families against solving cases of defilement out of court, as it is against the law.
