As of mid-March, when Kenya reported its first coronavirus case, over 40% of residents in Nairobi's low-income areas have seen their income completely wiped out due to job loss.
According to a survey conducted by Tifa Research, 43% of respondents reported a complete loss of income, while 69% experienced a reduction in earnings.
The research, which polled 579 individuals, found that 61% of those who reported reduced earnings due to the pandemic chose to cut back on food and drink expenses more than any other type of purchase or payment.
Respondents also significantly reduced spending on rent, clothing, entertainment, and transportation.
Tifa Research CEO Maggie Ireri warned that hunger is a looming challenge if the virus and lockdown continue, potentially leading to increased crime in Nairobi and other issues.
