On June 30, 2020, a video went viral on social media showing Kiss 100 FM presenter Andrew Kibe being arrested by three police officers in Hurlingham, Nairobi.
According to Andrew Kibe, the incident occurred at a car wash where he and his friends were present. The police officers, who were from Kilimani Police Station, attempted to arrest them without explaining the reason.
Speaking to the Kenyan Digest, Kibe stated that he snapped at the police officers because they did not inform them of the reason for the arrest. He added that despite being booked at Kileleshwa Police Station, they were released after paying a fine of Ksh 10,000.
When asked if the altercation turned physical, Kibe denied the allegations, stating that the situation did not escalate to violence. However, a witness recorded a video showing the police officers raising their batons at Kibe as he appeared unmoved.
Andrew Kibe was heard in the video saying, “You can’t just arrest people as you wish, tell us what we are accused of? We were talking with him nicely.” He also addressed one of the officers, saying, “You’ve poked your nose into our conversation, step back.”
The officer was offended and pointed at Kibe with his baton, further igniting the radio presenter's outrage. Kibe responded, “You are a Kenyan like me, don’t raise that thing to me!”
