June 30, 2020, marked six months since Kenyan entertainer Felix Orinda, popularly known as DJ Evolve, was shot at a club by Embakasi East MP Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino. The incident has left DJ Evolve bedridden at his home under the care of his mother, with a hospital bill of Ksh. 10 million and ongoing recovery costs.
Despite the slow pace of justice, Kenyans have taken to social media to express their outrage and have launched an online petition to push for DJ Evolve's justice on change.org. The petition, which has already received over 6,000 endorsements, is a plea to the justice system in Kenya to serve its people without prejudice, corruption, and classism.
During a recent interview with NTV, DJ Evolve, who is currently paralyzed, struggled with his speech as he narrated how his life took a sharp turn after he was shot by Babu. He expressed doubt about resuming work due to the extent of his injuries.
“Generally, I am doing better as opposed to when it first happened. I was really traumatised at the beginning but I learnt to live with it. At least nowadays I can be able to sleep unlike before where I couldn’t sleep at all. I kept having flashbacks of that fateful day and I needed medication to put me to sleep,” DJ Evolve painfully narrated while struggling to speak owing to a tube injected in his neck.
Netizens are calling for Babu Owino to be held accountable for his actions, and by signing the petition, they are saying ENOUGH IS ENOUGH for injustice in Kenya. The first steps to eradicate corrupt and unjust leaders are being taken, one at a time.
