On June 30, 2020, a former Kenya Revenue Authority employee and his wife appeared in court to face charges of tax evasion.

Joseph Chege Gikonyo and Lucy Kangai Stephen, along with their company Giche Limited, were accused of failing to pay Ksh38,692,694 in taxes between 2010 and 2015 in Mombasa County.

The couple pleaded not guilty to one count of fraud before Nairobi Anti-Corruption Chief Magistrate Lawrence Mugambi.

However, their lawyer, Ismael Abbas, claimed that they had already paid Ksh20 million to the taxman, terming their prosecution as malicious.

The suspects were ordered to pay a cash bail of Ksh5 million or bond of Ksh10 million and deposit their passports in court.
