June 30, 2020 - The Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) team has asked for an extension to complete their report on governance structure, citing the need for more time to iron out key contentious issues.
The 14-member team, led by Garissa Senator Yusuf Haji, had their mandate expire on Tuesday, but they are seeking at least a month to finalize their report.
According to a source, the team wants more time to address some key issues, which they believe will take at least a month to resolve.
The team's report, which was initially expected to be presented to President Uhuru Kenyatta and his handshake partner Raila Odinga, will now be delayed due to the extension request.
President Kenyatta had given the team a deadline to complete their report, but the team's request for an extension has put the timeline in jeopardy.
The BBI team was constituted by President Kenyatta and Odinga following their March 2018 handshake, and their report is expected to provide solutions to key issues affecting the country's governance structure.
