On June 30, 2020, news broke out that former Harambee Stars captain Musa Otieno had been hospitalized at Mbagathi Hospital after contracting COVID-19, his close friend confirmed.

Despite being on the forefront of helping vulnerable families during the pandemic, Otieno unfortunately contracted the disease.

"Please join me in praying for my dear friend Musa Otieno Ongao. He has the corona virus and has been admitted to hospital," his friend Humphrey Kaufman posted on social media.

Musa Otieno is Kenya's most capped player, having turned out for the country 105 times between 1993 and 2005. He was part of the team that featured at the 2004 African Cup of Nations in Tunisia.

At club level, Otieno played for AFC Leopards and Tusker FC locally before moving to Santos in South Africa, where he played for 14 years before retiring in 2011 and embarking on coaching.

He served as FC Talanta head coach and later as Harambee Stars assistant coach under Stanley Okumbi, before being moved to Harambee Starlets where he served on a short stint.

Since the first COVID-19 case was reported in the country, 144 people have succumbed to the disease, while over 6000 others have contracted it, with a recovery rate of just over 2000.
