Published on June 30, 2020, a disturbing case of rape in the Maldives has sparked widespread outrage.
A Kenyan woman was allegedly attacked and raped by two men on a safari boat in the greater Male region of Hulhumale.
The suspects, both 39 years old, were arrested at the scene but later released unconditionally, leaving many questioning the Maldivian police and justice system.
According to reports, the victim was offered a substantial sum of $500,000 to drop the charges against the two suspects, fuelling allegations of a cover-up.
There are also claims that one of the suspects is related to a senior government official, who may have aided their release.
However, the police declined to release details of the case, citing concerns that it could impede the investigation.
Following public outcry, the two suspects were rearrested, but the incident has left a dark stain on the Maldivian community's perception of its justice system.
