Abel Mutua's Terrifying Encounter with DCI and ATPU ¶
On a fateful day in 2019, renowned actor and scriptwriter Abel Mutua found himself in the midst of a terrifying encounter with officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU) while filming a music video along Kiambu Road.
As Abel recounts in a YouTube episode of Young and Stupid, the incident began when his friend Edward Omondi, a music producer, requested his feature in a new song. The two settled on shooting the video in Ndumberi, Limuru, but ultimately decided on a different location near the DCI headquarters due to time constraints.
However, their peaceful video shoot was disrupted when two fully armed GSU officers approached them, sparking a sense of unease. Abel quickly informed his crew of the looming danger and attempted to pack up, but it was too late.
"I heard the unmistakable sound of a cocking gun, and with my Kibra upbringing, I stood dead on my tracks," Abel explained.
The officers ordered everyone to stand still, and soon, a group of plainclothes DCI officers emerged from the bushes. The situation escalated further when a van full of ATPU officers arrived, and Abel and his crew were ordered to lie flat on the ground.
Abel defended himself, explaining that they were simply artists on a video shoot, but the officers remained unconvinced. One of them went on the radio to request backup, and a van from Muthaiga Police Station arrived, bundling Abel's crew inside.
Abel was ordered to follow the police car to Muthaiga Police Station, where he was informed that they had been shooting on grounds belonging to the National Intelligence Service (NIS), a serious offense.
After a day in custody, Abel and his crew were released, and he emphasized the importance of triple-checking locations prior to engaging in video shoots.
