Nairobi police boss Philip Ndolo has confirmed the arrest of Starehe Member of Parliament (MP) Charles Njagua, who is accused of inciting youths to take ownership of shops in a city building.
According to sources, the MP was arrested and taken to the Nairobi Area Police Station, but the charges against him remain unclear.
On social media, the MP updated his followers about his arrest, stating that he was being held at the Nairobi Area Police Station and that the charges against him seemed connected to Mwariro Market.
He also expressed his resolve to continue fighting for his constituents, saying, 'Allocations at Mwariro Market have to be fair.'
The MP was accused of collecting fees for balloting market stalls without permission from the national government.
Earlier, the Nairobi Regional Commissioner had issued a stern warning to politicians against collecting fees from traders as they promise to give them trading stalls.
During a press conference on Monday, June 29, the Regional Commissioner revealed that there is a group of politicians using completed market projects to make money for personal benefits.
He stated, 'Those doing this will be arrested and we shall not bend the law regardless of their social status.'
On social media, Kenyans have been commenting on the MP's arrest, with some calling for his release and others arguing that he was arrested for speaking the truth about the Gikomba market perennial fire.
