On June 29, 2020, Kenya confirmed 6,190 cases of Covid-19, with 120 new cases recorded.
As the country struggled to contain the spread of the virus, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) announced a major initiative to support the government's response efforts.
The UNDP is set to deploy 50 volunteer health experts to 14 counties worst affected by the pandemic, including Busia, Garissa, Kajiado, Kakamega, Kiambu, Kilifi, Kisumu, Machakos, Mandera, Migori, Nairobi, Taita Taveta, Uasin Gishu, and Wajir.
The health experts will stay in the counties for six months to help both the county and national governments effectively respond to the pandemic.
The initiative is part of a Covid-19 response support programme for counties, spearheaded by the UNDP in partnership with its donors.
UNDP Resident Representative in Kenya, Mr. Walid Badawi, said the programme is being implemented in close collaboration with the 14 counties' public service boards.
The volunteers will officially be deployed on July 1 in a ceremony in Kajiado.
