On June 29, 2020, the Council of Governors (CoG) expressed concern over a wave of impeachment motions targeting its members.
CoG's chair, Wycliffe Oparanya, castigated the actions by county assembly members, saying they were ill-informed and came at a time when the country was fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking during the inauguration of the members of the Inter-Governmental Relations Technical Committee gazetted by President Uhuru Kenyatta, Oparanya urged the Members of the County Assemblies to concentrate their energies on supporting efforts aimed at keeping COVID-19 at bay.
His comments come after the Kirinyaga County Assembly impeached Governor Anne Waiguru, who was later acquitted by the Senate Select Committee, and the Kitui County Assembly shelved its bid to oust Governor Charity Ngilu after the High Court halted the MCAs from impeaching the first-time Governor.
Lawyers representing Governor Ngilu filed an application on June 24, 2020, challenging the tabling and debating of the impeachment motion.
Meanwhile, Governor Wycliffe Oparanya has appealed to the Devolution Cabinet Secretary to unbundle and transfer several functions from the national government to the counties, including museums, disaster management, sports, fishing and fisheries, and water functions.
