Coronavirus Cases Rise in Kenya

Two workers at a restaurant in Kabarak, Nakuru County, have been confirmed to have contracted the coronavirus.

The cases were confirmed on June 28, 2020, after they were tested on June 25.

According to Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha, the two workers were among a group of 295 people who had attended a graduation ceremony at the restaurant two weeks prior.

Magoha, who visited the restaurant on June 29, 2020, said that the two workers had been in close contact with others and that 80 people had been placed in quarantine as a precautionary measure.

Magoha also stated that the government had not yet made a decision on reopening schools, citing the ongoing rise in coronavirus cases.

He said that President Uhuru Kenyatta would make a decision on reopening schools when he felt that the risk of infection had decreased.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health reported that 120 new cases of coronavirus had been confirmed on June 29, 2020, bringing the total number of cases in Kenya to 6190.

"We have not yet decided to reopen schools because the number of cases is still rising," Magoha said.

He added that the government would only consider reopening schools when the number of cases had decreased.

Magoha's comments come as the government continues to grapple with the spread of the coronavirus in Kenya.
