On June 29, 2020, the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kenyatta University to launch the KETRACO Scholarship for Orphans and Vulnerable Students (KSOVS) program.
The five-year initiative aims to support vulnerable female students in KU's Electrical or Civil Engineering faculty, bridging the engineering skills gap in the country.
KETRACO's Managing Director, Fernandes Barasa, hailed the partnership as a crucial step towards fulfilling the company's vision, which includes developing mutual collaboration with institutions of higher education.
"The overall objective of the MoU signing is to jointly develop mutual collaboration in various areas, including research that touches on electricity transmission, support equity, access, and excellence in higher education especially among vulnerable girls," Barasa said.
The partnership will facilitate mutual collaboration between KETRACO and KU, enabling them to explore emerging trends in electricity transmission and research.
According to KU Vice-Chancellor Prof Paul Wainaina, the partnership will give young girls from vulnerable families the opportunity to pursue their dreams.
