On June 28, 2020, Kenya confirmed 259 new cases of the novel coronavirus, bringing the total number of infections to 6,070.
Among the new cases was an 8-month-old baby, highlighting the ongoing risk of COVID-19 transmission to vulnerable populations.
Health Chief Administrative Secretary Dr. Mercy Mwangangi announced the new cases during the daily COVID-19 briefings at Afya House, stating that 2,718 samples were tested in the country within the last 24 hours.
The 259 patients included 256 Kenyans and three foreign nationals, with 159 males and 100 females among them. The oldest patient was 92 years old.
The case distribution across counties was as follows: Nairobi (127), Mombasa (39), Kiambu (22), Machakos (16), Busia (11), Makueni (9), Nakuru (9), Uasin Gishu (9), Kilifi (5), Kajiado (3), Kisumu (2), Lamu (2), Garissa (2), Marsabit (2), and Kwale (1).
Within the Nairobi Metropolitan area, the 127 cases were recorded in areas such as Westlands (31), Dagoretti North (22), Makadara (12), Embakasi East (11), and Lang'ata (11).
Similarly, Mombasa's infections were confirmed in Likoni (13), Mvita (8), Changamwe (7), Jomvu (6), and Nyali (4).
Dr. Mwangangi also reported that 35 patients were discharged from various health centers, bringing the total recoveries to 1,971. Unfortunately, two more patients succumbed to the disease, increasing the number of fatalities to 143.
