On Sunday night, a fire broke out at the Amani National Congress (ANC) party's offices in Kakamega County, destroying documents and causing significant damage.

The incident occurred at the party's offices located at Amalemba estate, where unknown individuals smashed a window, poured a flammable substance inside, and lit the fire before fleeing the scene.

ANC's Kakamega Chairman Julius Arunga confirmed that the fire was extinguished before it spread to other parts of the building, but not before documents were destroyed.

"Those involved fled after neighbours raised the alarm. We have reported the matter to police for investigations," Mr Arunga stated.

Despite the party not having a guard on duty, Mr Arunga assured that adequate security measures would be put in place to protect the property.

Western Region Police Commander Peris Kimani stated that investigations were underway, with samples of the chemical used to ignite the fire obtained.

The incident comes in the wake of the party's decision to expel Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, which was taken at a specially convened meeting of the National Governing Council (NGC) at the Amani House Secretariat.

Lurambi MP Titus Khamala has called for a thorough probe into the incident, linking it to the 2022 General Election and party leader Musalia Mudavadi's ambitions.

"What has happened is a clear testimony that there are people trying to undermine our party leader and derail his presidential bid. They should know we are firmly behind Mudavadi and that no amount of intimidation will change our stand," Mr Khamala said.
