On June 29, 2020, a heated debate erupted on K24's Punchline between constitutional lawyer Kamotho Waiganjo and Kirinyaga County Assembly lawyer Ndegwa Njiru.

Waiganjo, who represented Governor Anne Waiguru in the Senate, defended his decision to take up the case despite his close personal connection with her.

“Obviously it has a delicate balance to it. But given the very short timelines that are given for this matter, one has to ask themselves who has the greatest ability to understand the law of the matter, the facts of the matter, the emotions of the matter, the politics of the matter, and I could understand all those,” Waiganjo said.

However, Njiru accused Waiganjo of letting emotions run high and using them to frustrate arguments against the Governor.

“He taught me professional ethics. He was very clear on the issues of what is ethical in law and what is not ethical in law. This evening he mentions it was a delicate balance for him to choose between understanding the case, bringing the emotions of the case and the politics of the day,” Njiru stated.

Waiganjo insisted that there was absolutely nothing wrong with him playing the role of a husband, citing his credentials as a Constitutional lawyer and the client's constitutional right to choose their lawyer.
