June 29, 2020 - The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed another victim in the world of sports, with Brisbane Roar announcing the departure of former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler.
Fowler, who was appointed as the coach of Brisbane Roar in April 2019, had been working tirelessly to overhaul the squad and lift them to fourth in the table before the A-League was suspended on March 24.
However, with the league set to resume on July 16, Fowler was faced with the daunting task of returning to Australia and undergoing a 14-day quarantine, a requirement for anyone entering the country.
In a statement, Fowler expressed his gratitude to the club and the fans for the warm welcome and support he received during his tenure.
"I would like to thank the club for the opportunity, and the Brisbane Roar FC fans for the warm welcome and support for me and the team. We are very proud of what we achieved," Fowler said.
Club deputy chairman Chris Fong echoed Fowler's sentiments, stating that the global pandemic had impacted their plans together but understood that family comes first during these difficult times.
"We are disappointed that the global pandemic has impacted our plans together but completely understand that family comes first during these difficult times," Fong said.
Fowler, who played 369 matches for Liverpool, scoring 183 goals in two stints between 1993 and 2007, will be remembered for his impressive career with the Reds.
