On June 29, 2020, Nairobi Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku made a significant ruling in the case of Narok Senator Ole Kina, dismissing his application challenging the charge sheet.
The charge sheet alleged that on February 19, 2020, Senator Ole Kina uttered words that incited feelings of discrimination against non-Maasai communities living in Narok County.
According to the charge sheet, the senator made the statement while appearing on Citizen TV's JKLive, saying 'Maasai issues will be articulated by Maasais not Manje who is…who…who can be able to get an audience in Mount Kenya.'
Prosecutors claimed that the senator's words were intended to incite feelings of discrimination against non-Maasai communities living in Narok County because of their ethnicity.
Senator Ole Kina pleaded not guilty to the ethnic contempt charge and was released on Ksh100,000 cash bail. However, the court ordered him not to comment on the issue until his case is heard and determined.
