On June 28, a heated debate erupted on live TV between lawyers Ndengwa Njiru and Kamotho Waiganjo over the impeachment of Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru. The clash occurred just a day after a Senate select committee cleared Waiguru of the impeachment charges on June 27.
Waiganjo, who represented Waiguru in the Senate, had agreed to appear on the show to discuss the impeachment hearings. However, his close personal connection to Waiguru, being her husband, raised eyebrows.
Waiganjo explained that he took up the case despite his close relationship with Waiguru, citing his ability to understand the law, facts, emotions, and politics of the matter. He stated, 'Obviously it has a delicate balance to it. But given the very short timelines that are given for this matter, one has to ask themselves who has the greatest ability to understand the law of the matter, the facts of the matter, the emotions of the matter, the politics of the matter, and I could understand all those.'
Njiru, who represented the Kirinyaga County Assembly in the impeachment hearings, accused Waiganjo of letting emotions run high and using them to frustrate arguments against Waiguru. He noted that Waiganjo had once taught him Professional Ethics at law school but lacked ethics in the Waiguru case.
Waiganjo insisted that he played a neutral role as an advocate, citing his credentials as a Constitutional lawyer. He stated, 'But one has to ask who would put the best case so that the country can hear the best case? I thought I could and I did my best.'
