On June 29, 2020, the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) committee made a significant announcement, endorsing a proposal by Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga to hold a national referendum.
According to the committee, the decision was made after concluding on the matter and drafting their final recommendations for action.
As reported by the Daily Nation, Kenyans can now prepare themselves for a referendum, which is expected to take place after the final BBI report is handed over to President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga.
"A senior official in the Committee said that Kenyans now tighten their belts as it is now clear that the country will be going for a national referendum," the publication reported.
The committee's decision was based on the provisions of the 2010 constitution, which states that certain changes to the governance structure can only be validated through a referendum.
"It is a somewhat tough journey especially in view of the current global situation, but Kenyans must understand that for peace and stability in the future we must accept this process. We must sacrifice now for a better Kenya tomorrow," a source close to the committee noted.
