On June 25, 2020, the government apologized to Kenya's sports veterans for years of neglect.

According to Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed, her ministry is compiling a list of heroes and heroines to benefit from a long-term assistance programme.

Many of these sports legends have died in poverty, with the government only recognizing them when it's too late. This is unacceptable.

While we commend the government for acknowledging the issue, a lasting solution is needed. This includes proper medical cover, a financial stimulus package, and a pension scheme to appreciate their contributions to the country.

The ministry should also establish clear criteria for who benefits from its intervention to prevent imposters from taking advantage of the system.

It's essential to note that the government's efforts should not be misconstrued as a responsibility to take care of retired sports people. The sports celebrities should be role models both on and off the field.

Kenya's sports veterans have led themselves into self-destruction, but the current crop of sportsmen and women can learn from their tribulations to lead productive lives.
