On June 28, 2020, Dr. Oburu Oginga, elder brother to Raila Odinga, expressed his thoughts on Raila's political future in an interview with a local daily. The publication date of this article is June 29, 2020.
According to Oburu, Raila cannot retire from politics without becoming President. He questioned why some people were urging Raila to retire due to his age, saying, 'We do not see anyone who can pose a challenge to Raila. Some people are saying he goes home, how can he go home before becoming President?'
Oburu emphasized that age is just a number and that Raila should be allowed to serve as President for at least one term. He stated, 'So, we are saying, let him be President for even one term.'
At the time of Oburu's statement, Raila was recovering at the Saudi German Hospital Dubai (SGH Dubai) after a successful surgery. Raila had spoken out for the first time since his surgery, commenting on the Malawian elections. He congratulated the people of Malawi on their successful and peaceful presidential election and commended outgoing President Peter Mutharika for allowing a peaceful transition of power.
ODM Deputy Leader Hassan Joho had earlier reported that Raila was recovering well after the minor surgery, saying, 'I had the opportunity to speak to my party leader and my father the Baba of the nation. I feel happy and encouraged that he is progressing well.'
